Cacciatori in una barca avvicinano sigilli in un'apertura nel ghiaccio. Una barca a vela aspetta sullo sfondo. Thorolf Holmboe nacque a Vefsn in Norvegia settentrionale e si trasferì con la sua famiglia a Tromsø più a nord all'età di 10 anni. Suo padre gestiva una galleria d'arte e fondò la Tromsø Art Society. Tromsø era (e lo è ancora) il portale per l'Artico ed era un importante centro di caccia artica. La maggior parte delle navi sigillanti della Norvegia si trovava a Tromsø. Era uno studente della leggenda del pittore norvegese Hans Gude a Berlino. In seguito visse e lavorò a Parigi e Oslo.
