Una nave a vela in ghiaccio. Esplorare le navi spesso sarebbe rimasto bloccato nel ghiaccio e ha dovuto aspettare fino a primavera per navigare di nuovo. A volte questo era anche l'obiettivo, in modo che la nave potesse funzionare come base per le spedizioni sul ghiaccio e sulle isole vicine. Thorolf Holmboe nacque a Vefsn in Norvegia settentrionale e si trasferì con la sua famiglia a Tromsø più a nord all'età di 10 anni. Suo padre gestiva una galleria d'arte e fondò Tromsø Art Society. Era uno studente della leggenda del pittore norvegese Hans Gude a Berlino. In seguito visse e lavorò a Parigi e Oslo. Oltre alla pittura, ha fatto disegni per ceramica, manifesti e libretti stile art nouveau.
