A sailing ship in pack ice. Exploring ships would often get stuck in the ice and had to wait till spring to sail again. Sometimes this even was the goal, so that the ship could function as a base for expeditions on the ice and to nearby islands. Thorolf Holmboe was born in Vefsn in Northern Norway and moved with his family to Tromsø further north at the age of 10. His father ran an art gallery and founded Tromsø Art Society. He was a student of the Norwegian painter legend Hans Gude in Berlin. He later lived and worked in both Paris and Oslo. In addition to painting, he did designs for pottery, posters and book-bindings art nouveau style.
