L'identité spécifique des sitters dans ce, Titien le plus grand portrait de groupe, est contestée, mais l'homme au centre est très probablement Andrea Vendramin (1481–1547), tandis que celui à sa droite est son frère Gabriel Vendramin (1484–1552), un important collectionneur d'oeuvres d'art. Les garçons sont les sept anciens fils. Le reliquaire de la Vraie Croix sur l'autel existe toujours dans la Scuola di S. Giovanni Evangelista à Venise. Il a été présenté à un ancien Andrea Vendramin, Gardien de la Scuola, au nom de cette confrérie en 1369. Une fois, on dit qu'il l'a sauvé d'un canal. La peinture a sûrement été faite pour un site spécifique dans la famille de palazzo vénitien. Pendant l'exécution, cependant, il a été coupé à gauche, probablement parce que le patron a changé l'emplacement prévu. Cela explique l'hébergement un peu gênant des trois garçons à l'extrême gauche, qui ont sûrement été peints par l'artiste
