Die drei Köpfe blicken auf die drei Zeitalter des Menschen: Jugend, Reife und Alter. Die Beschriftung ist in drei den jeweiligen Köpfen darunter zugeordneten Abschnitten angeordnet. Der linke Kopf ähnelt Titian selbst im alten Alter; der gebärtige Zentralmann wurde gedacht, seinen Sohn Orazio zu vertreten, während die Jugend seinen Cousin und Erben Marco Vecellio darstellen kann (geboren 1545). Die dreiköpfige Bestie - Wolf, Löwe und Hund - ist ein Symbol der Vorsicht.
