Sono state proposte diverse identità per il giovane ricco vestito in questo ritratto, ma nessuna con certezza. Tuttavia, il ritratto sembra essere stato ben noto, almeno nel XVII secolo; Carlo Dolci includeva una copia della figura sullo sfondo del suo martirio di S. Andrea (Palazzo Pitti, Firenze). Il dipinto è generalmente considerato un primo lavoro di Tiziano. L’umore contemplativo del soggetto e il diffuso, delicato gioco di luce sulle superfici ampiamente dipinte ricordano fortemente il contemporaneo Giorgione di Tiziano. La tela è stata in passato attribuita anche a Giorgione. Di umore, posa e tecnica, il ritratto di Frick ricorda da vicino la figura centrale del Concerto (Palazzo Pitti), un dipinto che è stato anche attribuito sia a Tiziano che a Giorgione.
