In seinen letzten Jahren hat Titian eine Reihe von Gemälden gemalt, die dem Passion Christi gewidmet sind. Dazu gehören: Crowning with Thorns (Alte Pinakothek, München), Mocking of Christ (Art Museum, St. Louis), Ecce Homo (The Hermitage, St. Petersburg) und zwei Versionen von Christ Carrying the Cross (The Hermitage, St. Petersburg und Museo del Prado, Madrid). In diesen Arbeiten, die mit immenser dramatischer Kraft durchdrungen sind, lösen sich die Pinsel allmählich in schnell aufgetragene Dabs von Pigment auf. Ziel ist es nicht mehr, die Natur zu reproduzieren, sondern direkt die rohe Emotion des Malers zu vermitteln, der voll am tragischen Thema des Bildes beteiligt ist.
