Filippo II (1527-1598) fu l'unico figlio di Carlo V e Isabella del Portogallo. Nel 1551, a seguito della Dieta imperiale di Augusta, divenne reggente della Spagna. Dopo l'abdicazione di suo padre, fu incoronato il re di Spagna. Tiziano ritrae il principe, all'età di circa ventiquattro anni, vestito da un magnifico, sontuosamente decorato insieme di armatura. La bianchezza della sua pelle corrisponde alle sue calze bianche e alla lucentezza dorata verdastra sull'armatura. In questo modo, la carnagione pallida del principe appare più distinta.
