La giovane Maria è vestita in un vestito di seta blu brillante ed è circondata da un aureolo dorato mentre sale i gradini del tempio, senza aiuto, in modo eretto, dignitoso che indica, anche all'età di tre anni, quale sarà il suo futuro ruolo. L'abito scintillante, la luce d'oro che la circonda, e le colonne di marmo opulenti dietro di lei danno alla figura di Maria un'aura di preziosità che è ulteriormente accentuata dal netto contrasto con la moglie del vecchio contadino brutto in primo piano.
