Titian pintó cuatro grandes lienzos de los condenados por María de Hungría, la hermana de Charles V y su regente en Holanda. Representaron a Tityus, Sisyphus, Tantalus e Ixion, todos condenados a tortura perpetua por incurrir en el descontento de los dioses. Sólo Tityus y Sisyphus siguen siendo extantes. Tityus fue sentenciado a que su hígado perpetuamente devorado por un buitre por haber violado Latona y Sisyphus para llevar una roca sin fin colina arriba por silenciar sobre el asunto de Zeus con Egira. Su gigantismo es Michelangelesque, y Tityus es modelado en un dibujo de Miguel Ángel de 1532. En estos dos lienzos, Titian logra efectos ricos de color y chiaroscuro con una paleta limitada en un anticipo de su estilo tardío.
