Nel XVII secolo il dipinto fu attribuito a Giorgione, e più tardi per molto tempo a Palma Vecchio. Tuttavia, recentemente è stato dato a Tiziano. Il Bravo, così chiamato a causa del misterioso uomo armato con le spalle a noi, cade nella fase Giorgionesca di Tiziano e dimostra una sottocorrente di crudeltà. Il soggetto è stato identificato in modo convincente come l'arresto di Bacco da parte di Pentheus, re di Tebes, che si opponeva al culto Bacchic. La vendetta di Bacchus era terribile, e Pentheus fu strappato a pezzi dalla madre e dalle sorelle.
