le pape nicolas iv a commandé la décoration en mosaïque de l'abside de santa maria maggiore , remplacer le fifth-century mosaïque mais sans changer entièrement le sujet d'origine et en conservant le buste du sauveur , aurait apparu miraculeusement au moment de la basilica's consécration . la tâche a été confiée à jacopo torriti , qui a quitté l'atelier du latran autour 1291 pour aider le travail à santa maria maggiore .
