Tom Roberts traf Charles Conder 1888 in Sydney und die beiden wurden am Coogee Strand zusammengemalt. Diese Gemäldeexpeditionen erwiesen sich als einflussreich für den jüngeren Conder. Später in diesem Jahr folgte er Roberts nach Melbourne, um sich mit ihm und Arthur Streeton in ihrem Künstlercamp in Heidelberg zu verbinden.
