Trovata tra le trentatré storie miracolose nelle leggende illustrate di Ishiyamadera è questa prima immagine datata di Murasaki Shikibu che guarda la luna mentre inizia a scrivere il suo racconto. Si trova nel profilo, indossando il sash rosso di un pellegrino religioso e spingendo da parte le tende a guardare verso le acque blu scuro del Lago di Biwa. Verso sinistra, l’immagine illusoria della riflessione della luna entra in vista, galleggiando in cima alle onde. La calligrafia è stata attribuita al prominente cortigiano Sanjōnishi Sanetaka (1455–1537).
