Murasaki Shikibu sembra pronto per iniziare a scrivere il suo racconto, pausing come se a metà pensiero. La testa si allontana dalla sua scrivania, mentre il suo sguardo trancelike è diretto leggermente verso l'alto, verso i fogli calligrafici nella parte superiore del dipinto. Le iscrizioni elencano le quattro fasi della contemplazione buddista di Tendai (shimon) che Murasaki aveva imparato, insieme a due delle sue waka (poeee di una sillaba) che parlano all’impermanenza della vita (mujōkan).
