Elegante a loro diritto, i crisantemi appaiono spesso insieme a quaglie in dipinti. La combinazione era particolarmente favorita dagli artisti cinesi del Song del Sud, in quanto significava pace e longevità. Insieme ai chysanthemum, la raffigurazione di altri fiori autunnali, come il chiostro del cespuglio (hagi) e i campanili cinesi (kikyō), crea un ambiente stagionale per la coppia di uccelli. Il dipinto è firmato da Tosa Mitsuoki, un maestro di pittura gioiello in linea finemente eseguita e colore brillante. Divenne un artista ufficiale del tribunale nel 1654 e fece degli sforzi concertati per far rivivere le sorti della scuola di Tosa, che era stata tutto ma oscurata dalla scuola di Kano dal periodo Muromachi.
