Totoya Hokkei, 1780 in Edo geboren, arbeitete als Fischer, bevor er ein ukiyo-e Künstler wurde. Er studierte japanische Malerei unter Kanō Yōsen’in Korenobu, dem Leiter der Kobikichō-Niederlassung der Kanō-Schule der Malerei.
