Ugolino era allievo di Duccio, il pittore preminente di Siena trecentesca e figura cardine dell'arte rinascimentale. Può aver assistito Duccio nella pittura del "Maestà", la celebre pala d'altare per la Cattedrale di Siena, completata nel 1311. L'attuale dipinto, che ha formato il pannello centrale di un polittico (pittrice a più pannelli) è stato modellato sulla Madonna con Bambino nella "Maesta", e Ugolino può aver usato modelli per trasferire il disegno.
