Ugolino war eine Schülerin von Duccio, der prägende Maler im vierzehnten Jahrhundert Siena und eine Schlüsselfigur in der Kunst der frühen Renaissance. Er kann Duccio bei der Malerei der ""Maestà" unterstützt haben, das gefeierte Altarbild für Siena-Kathedrale, vollendet 1311. Das gegenwärtige Gemälde, das die Mittelplatte eines Polyptychons (multi-paneled Altarbild) bildete, wurde auf der Madonna und Kind in der "Maesta" modelliert und Ugolino kann Vorlagen verwendet haben, um das Design zu übertragen.
