Ugolino di Nerio war einer der wichtigsten Maler in Siena und Florenz im frühen 14. Jahrhundert. Er erhielt prestigeträchtige Kommissionen für Kirchen und dieses kleine Werk war wahrscheinlich Teil eines großen Altarwerks, das er produzierte, jetzt abgebaut. Es wäre eine in einer Reihe von Platten gewesen, die seine lackierte Basis bildete, genannt eine Predella. Der kniende Karmelitenfriar (identifizierbar durch seinen weißen Mantel), die Frau und der hier abgebildete junge Junge könnten die Spender sein, die das Altarbild in Auftrag gegeben haben.
