Bird on a Branch – (Unkei Eii) קוֹדֵם הַבָּא

Artist:

תַאֲרִיך: 501

גודל: 23.7cm x 27.5cm

טֶכנִיקָה: Paper

This small painting perfectly encapsulates both the spirit and style of Zen ink compositions of the late medieval period in the style of Sesshū Tōyō (1420–1506). Monochrome and effectively utilizing blank space, the work features dry and spontaneous brushwork that captures the moment a small bird (a titmouse) has alighted on a wizened branch. The brusquely brushed calligraphy by Daitokuji temple prelate Daiko Shōkaku cites a verse by the well-known Zen monk‑poet Son’an (Kisei Reigen, 1402–1488). It reads: In the forest, when evening comes birds retire and nest together.Coupled birds remain in flight, their joined wings letting them soar, not looking for a place to spend the night.—Son’an(Trans. adapted from Miyeko Murase)
