As train travel became an increasingly common activity after 1850, bags developed that would keep essential items close to hand. Made from sturdy canvas, they were often decorated with home embroidery, particularly Berlin wool-work. This example is lined with red cotton and finished, probably by a local saddler, with a leather handle and metal lock.
