Museum: Simone Handbag Museum (Seoul, South Korea)

After the simplicity of Neoclassical dress, fashions of the 1820s returned to more overt displays of decoration and applied embellishment. This silk velvet reticule is richly embroidered with fish scales, glass and metal beads, silk chenille and metal thread. Velvets are created by additional thread being woven over rods to form a pile, which makes it one of the most expensive of all fabric weaves. Silk velvet is especially costly.
