This imposing image of Our Lady of the Rosary holding in her arms the Infant Saviour of the World is distinguished by its considerable size, by the treatment of the majestic figure and also by the colour of the clothing. The ethereal serenity of Our Lady is like that of her Son, who wears a white gown like those used in some 18th century images and above all in 19th century ones. The Mother wears a long robe that hides her feet. The repainting to which the image has been subjected did not hide the fichu that enfolds the shoulders and is fastened at the breast by a brooch set with stones – an article of female costume adopted in the final quarter of the 1700s, which continued to appear in many images carved in former Portuguese India.
