In India, devotion to Corpus Christi came to include images in which the consecrated Host was depicted for the faithful. Such is the case in this painting of a Monstrance, which can be dated by its shape and decoration, including small bells to the early 17th century. It not only reproduces the Monstrance but also depicts angels and seraphim who support it, arranged in as sort of halo around the gleaming gold centre. The large frame stylistically contemporary with the painting, is made of solid wood carved in perspective with the corners cut on the bias; a pearl motif on the inside border of the frame completes its decoration, otherwise composed of a sequence of stylized floral elements.
