Among the items of ecclesiastical furniture at the Museum of Christian Art is this oblong glazed box which was probably used as a reliquary box. An interesting feature of this object is the decorative trimming in metal (brass or tombac). Such application is often found in domestic furniture and in frames for sacred images. The design was traced onto metal that had been flattened and sectioned into strips; it was then cut out and shaped with great delicacy of workmanship. Auricular curls that also take on the appearance of plant forms and half stars (or semi hexangular leaves) are arranged in two wide bands and cover the two front sides of the box; they are punctuated by small round-headed tacks by which the lacework-like metal applique is attached. The corner placing of this curling design, closely adapted to the angular design, shows how skilled metalsmiths were.
