Nel 1832, Utagawa Hiroshige ricevette un invito a partecipare ad una processione ufficiale per consegnare regali dalla sua città natale, Edo, all'imperatore a Kyoto. Viaggiando lungo il percorso Tōkaidō che collegava le due capitali, Hiroshige schizzò ogni villaggio lungo la strada. Quando Hiroshige tornò a casa, completò una cinquantina di cinque serie di stampe commemorando il suo viaggio chiamato Fifty-tre Stations of the Tokaido Road, che contiene alcune delle sue stampe più conosciute. Nella stampa Shinagawa Sunrise, una città balneare è illustrata, con navi che siedono sull'acqua blu tranquilla, e cittadini che camminano lungo la strada lungo negozi a riva. L'illuminazione bianca che siede sull'acqua rende difficile distinguere dove il mare termina e il cielo inizia.
