Die Anbetung der Magi war ein gemeinsames Thema in der Renaissance Florentine Kunst. Dieses Gemälde wurde von einem Banker in Auftrag gegeben, der mit dem Haus von Medici, Gaspare di Zanobi del Lama, für eine Kapelle in der Kirche Santa Maria Novella verbunden ist, die seither zerstört wurde. Botticelli malte viele Mitglieder der Medici Familie in die Szene, darunter del Lama selbst, Cosimo de Medici, Piero und Giovanni Medici (Cosimos Söhne), und Giuliano und Lorenzo (Cosimos Enkel). Obwohl die vier Ältesten der Medicis bereits verstorben waren, als Botticelli dieses Stück gemalt hatte, regierte Lorenzo effektiv Florenz. Botticelli enthielt auch ein Porträt von sich, in der gelben Robe in der unteren rechten Ecke des Gemäldes.
