Anche se un dipinto di una giovane donna, il cape rosso e il bovino sono associati con l'immaginario tradizionale di Daruma (Bodhidharma), il leggendario monaco che ha viaggiato dall'India alla Cina per stabilire il Buddismo di Chan (Zen), che è spesso raffigurato in simile garbo. Il dipinto qui, non firmato ma molto probabilmente da Toyoharu basato su considerazioni stilistiche, è inteso come una rappresentazione parodica di un cortigiano Yoshiwara. La poesia di Shokusanjin gioca su frasi buddiste relative ai nove anni di meditazione zazen di Daruma in una grotta per connotare una festa di bere. Bere l'amore di nove anni, insieme a briciole di snack come i fagioli Zazen, ci rendiamo conto che originariamente non c'era nulla.
