Konfrontiert mit einer ehebrecherischen Frau, die das Gesetz zur Strafe verurteilen würde, indem sie gestohlen wurde, schaut Jesus auf, während er im Schmutz schreibt und sagt: "Wer ist ohne Sünde." Die Szene wird in der Regel als Streit zwischen Jesus und den Pharisäern gezeigt. Hier ist die absorbierte Aufmerksamkeit der Zuschauer auf Christus und die rätselhaften Worte, die er schreibt – die wir, wie die Pharisäer, nicht sehen können. Allein der Blick Christi richtet sich an die beschuldigte Frau. Valentins Originalität und tiefes Gefühl der Menschheit sind in vollem Beweis.
