Un ángel aparece a José en un sueño, instándole a tomar a María y a Jesús y huir a Egipto. En el siglo XVII, José se convirtió en un paradigma del padre guardián. Aquí, Valentin emplea tacto para mejorar la fisicalidad de las figuras. Un erudito ha aludido a la importancia de la noción de la gracia de Dios en tal cuadro, para "la aparición celestial en el mismo momento en que, incapaz de levantarse a las verdades del Espíritu, agotada por el esfuerzo, el hombre cae en su torpor."
