Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, erstwhile V&A Museum, Bombay, was the third museum to be established in India and the first colonial building to be built for the specific purpose of housing a museum. Sir George Birdwood and Capt. Wilkins, the PWD engineer, devised the first design for the building, which was later revised by another British PWD engineer, William Tracey, who died before the plans could be implemented. Scott McClelland & Co. architects completed the design with further modifications, though they retained most of Birdwood’s specifications which included ‘a long hall’, ‘Doric pillars’, galleries on either side of the building, and large windows for light and ventilation.
