Durante su estancia en el hospital psiquiátrico Saint-Paul-de-Mausole en Saint-Rémy-de-Provence,Van Gogh se convierte en el campo circundante para enriquecer su geografía como artista. Pinta incansablemente y dibuja nuevos motivos provenzales: cipreses, olivares y colinas. El rango bajo de Alpilles que se eleva detrás de los edificios del hospital proporciona a Vincent la oportunidad de pintar el macizo resistente, así como la cantera situada cerca.
