Durant son séjour à l'hôpital psychiatrique Saint-Paul-de-Mausole à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence,Van Gogh se tourne vers la campagne environnante pour enrichir sa géographie en tant qu'artiste. Il peint sans relâche et dessine de nouveaux motifs provençaux : cyprès, oliveraies et collines. La gamme basse Alpilles qui monte derrière les bâtiments de l'hôpital offre à Vincent l'occasion de peindre le massif robuste ainsi que la carrière située à proximité.
