Am Vorabend seiner Flucht aus dem Asyl in Saint-Rémy im Mai 1890, Van Gogh malte eine außergewöhnliche Gruppe von vier Stillleben, zu denen sowohl die Rosen des Museums und Irises (58.187) gehören. Diese Sträuße und ihre Gegenstücke – eine aufrechte Komposition von Iris (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam) und eine horizontale Komposition von Rosen (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) – wurden als Serie oder Ensemble konzipiert, auf einem Par mit der früheren Sunflower Dekoration, die er in Arles gemacht. Spuren von Rosa entlang der Tischplatte und Rosenblätter in der gegenwärtigen Malerei, die im Laufe der Zeit verblasst sind, bieten eine schwache Erinnerung an die früher lebendigere "Kanbe von rosa Rosen vor einem gelbgrünen Hintergrund in einer grünen Vase."
