Der Ausdruck der Berechnung, fast grausam, Beurteilung – verstärkt durch seine geschlossene Faust – verleiht diesem Mann eine aggressive Luft, aber wir kennen seine Identität nicht. Die Inschrift auf dem Parapet hilft nicht. Diese Buchstaben, VVO, wurden als eine Form des Latin vivo (im Leben) interpretiert. Dies würde nahelegen, dass das Porträt aus dem Leben gemalt wurde und dass es sowohl Subjekt als auch Maler ein Maß an Unsterblichkeit verleiht. Es kann jedoch wahrscheinlicher sein, eine Abkürzung eines humanistischen Mottos, vielleicht virtus vincit omnia (virtue erobert alle).
