Van Gogh produzierte mehr als zwanzig Selbstporträts während seines Pariser Aufenthaltes (1886–88). Kurz Geld, aber entschlossen, seine Fähigkeiten als Figurenmaler zu hönen, wurde er sein eigener bester Sitter: "Ich kaufte gezielt einen guten genug Spiegel, um von mir zu arbeiten, um ein Modell zu wollen." Dieses Bild, das das Bewusstsein des Künstlers für neo-impressionistische Technik und Farbtheorie zeigt, ist eine von mehreren, die auf der Rückseite einer früheren Bauernstudie gemalt werden.
