Ende 1889 bemalte Van Gogh drei Versionen dieses Bildes. Er beschrieb die erste als Studie aus der Natur "farbiger mit feierlicheren Tönen" (Privatsammlung) und die zweite als Studio-Rendition in einer "sehr diskreten Reihe" von Farben (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.). Die gegenwärtige Arbeit, die am meisten aufgelöst und stilisiert von den drei, war für seine Schwester und Mutter gedacht, zu der Van Gogh schrieb: "Ich hoffe, dass das Gemälde der Frauen in den Olivenbäumen ein wenig nach Ihrem Geschmack sein wird - ich schickte [a] Zeichnung von ihm nach Gauguin, . . . . . und er dachte es gut. . . ."
