Nel maggio 1889, dopo episodi di auto-mutilazione e ricovero, Vincent van Gogh scelse di entrare in un manicomio a Saint-Rémy, in Francia. Lì, nell'ultimo anno prima della sua morte, creò quasi 130 dipinti. Entro la prima settimana, ha iniziato Irises, lavorando dalla natura nell'asilo
