Uno degli amici più vicini di van Gogh e sitter preferiti in Arles era il postino locale, Joseph Roulin. Mentre la pittura di questo lavoro, van Gogh ha scritto a suo fratello, “Sono ora al lavoro con un altro modello, un postino in uniforme blu, cucito con oro, una grande faccia barbuta, molto come Socrates.” In effetti, il modesto postino ha tutta l'autorità di un ammiraglio.
