Einer der engsten Freunde und Lieblingssitter von van Gogh in Arles war der lokale Poster, Joseph Roulin. Bei der Malerei dieses Werkes schrieb van Gogh zu seinem Bruder: „Ich bin jetzt bei der Arbeit mit einem anderen Modell, einem Poster in blauer Uniform, mit Gold getrimmt, einem großen bärten Gesicht, ganz wie Sokrates.“ Tatsächlich hat der bescheidene Poster alle Autorität eines Admirals. Van Gogh bemalte auch mehrere Porträts von Madame Roulin (z.B. MFA-Objekt Nr. 48.548), sowie Bilder ihrer Kinder, wie er schrieb, um „eine ganze Familie“ darzustellen. „
