“Auvers è molto bella, tra le altre cose un sacco di vecchi tetti di paglia, che stanno diventando rare... per davvero è profondamente bella, è il vero paese, caratteristico e pittoresco,” Vincent van Gogh scrisse a suo fratello e cognata dopo l’arrivo del pittore ad Auvers-sur-Oise il 20 maggio 1890. Lavorando in una frazione chiamata Chaponval nella parte occidentale di Auvers, Van Gogh dipinse un ammasso di abitazioni incastonate tra giardini murati e alberi sagomati contro un grigio-blu, cielo nuvoloso. Queste case esistono ancora (anche se ora alterate) lungo la Rue de Gré.
