“Auvers es muy hermoso, entre otras cosas un montón de viejos techos de paja, que se están volviendo raro... porque realmente es profundamente hermoso, es el verdadero país, característico y pintoresco”, escribió Vincent van Gogh a su hermano y cuñada después de la llegada del pintor a Auvers-sur-Oise el 20 de mayo de 1890. Trabajando en una aldea llamada Chaponval en la parte occidental de Auvers, Van Gogh pintó un racimo de viviendas enclavadas entre jardines amurallados y árboles siluetados contra un cielo gris azul y nublado. Estos hogares todavía existen (aunque ahora alterados) a lo largo de la Rue de Gré.
