Van Gogh vivió en París desde marzo de 1886 hasta febrero de 1888 y representó regularmente al suburbio industrial de Asnières, al noroeste de la capital. Van Gogh estaba fascinado por escenas de la vida del café, y aquí representó un restaurante de clase obrera, cuyo nombre aparece tanto en el lado del edificio como en un cartel entre dos árboles prominentes a la derecha. La figura del primer plano lleva al trabajador azul
