Van Gogh lebte von März 1886 bis Februar 1888 in Paris und repräsentierte regelmäßig den Industrievorort Asnières, im Nordwesten der Hauptstadt. Van Gogh war fasziniert von Szenen des Café-Lebens, und hier repräsentierte er ein Restaurant der Arbeiterklasse, dessen Name sowohl auf der Seite des Gebäudes als auch auf einer Karte zwischen zwei prominenten Bäumen nach rechts erscheint.
