Van Gogh visse a Parigi dal marzo 1886 fino al febbraio 1888 e rappresentava regolarmente la periferia industriale di Asnières, a nord-ovest della capitale. Van Gogh era affascinato da scene di vita di caffè, e qui ha rappresentato un ristorante di classe operaia, il cui nome appare sia sul lato dell'edificio e su un cartello tra due alberi prominenti a destra.
