Van Gogh si immerse nella pittura dei colorati frutteti intorno ad Arles nel sud della Francia, dove si stabilì nel febbraio 1888. La struttura dei rami degli alberi di albicocca è ancora ben visibile attraverso il fiore e i suoi pennellati seguono la direzione dei tronchi degli alberi verticali. Dipinse una serie di immagini di frutteti durante i suoi prolifici attacchi di attività ad Arles. Il suo ottimismo iniziale, espresso in lettere al fratello Theo, incoraggiò Gauguin ad unirsi a lui.
