Van Gogh se inmersó en pintar los coloridos huertos alrededor de Arles en el sur de Francia, donde se estableció en febrero de 1888. La estructura de las ramas de los árboles de albaricoque sigue siendo claramente visible a través de la flor y sus pinceladas siguen la dirección de los troncos de los árboles verticales. Pintó una serie de imágenes de huertos durante sus prolíficos combates de actividad en Arles. Su optimismo inicial, expresado en cartas a su hermano Theo, alentó a Gauguin a unirse a él allí.
