Il soggetto del ritratto è il diciassettenne Armand Joseph Desire Roulin (1871 – 1945), figlio maggiore del post-master Joseph Roulin. Nell'estate del 1888, van Gogh divenne amico del suo vicino ad Arles. Con grande affetto, l'artista dipinse una serie di ritratti di Joseph Roulin e della sua famiglia. Armand Roulin modellato per due ritratti simili in formato ed esecuzione; quello di Essen è la seconda versione. Si presenta con un giovane vestito di una giacca gialla, pieno di fronte a uno sfondo di verde veronese. Van Gogh probabilmente dipinse questo studio accuratamente composto poco dopo la prima versione nel dicembre 1888. A quanto pare il soggetto e la sua famiglia preferivano questo ritratto.
