Van Gogh dipinse questo studio di olio nella cena del 1888 ad Arles. In una lettera a suo fratello Theo, ha descritto il motivo, che aveva precedentemente catturato in un disegno: »Al momento sto lavorando su uno studio [...] barche, viste da una banchina, dall'alto. Le due barche sono rosa viola, l'acqua è molto verde, nessun cielo, una bandiera tricolore sull'albero. Un operaio con un passero sta scaricando sabbia. Ho anche un disegno di esso.« In particolare, la scena si trova sul luogo di atterraggio sulla riva sinistra del Rodano, non lontano da Place Lamartine, a pochi passi da van Gogh
